Greater London Authority London Assembly
The London Assembly comprises 25 members, elected at the same time as the Mayor. The London Assembly examines the Mayor's activities, questioning him about his decisions. The Assembly is also able to investigate other issues of importance to Londoners, publish its findings and recommendations, and make proposals to the Mayor.
City Hall is home to the Mayor of London, the London Assembly and the GLA, who in July 2002 became tenants of this striking rounded glass building on the south bank of the Thames near Tower Bridge.
City Hall was designed by Foster and Partners, one of Britain's leading architects, whose design brief was to create a building for the GLA that would become a new landmark for the capital. It is part of the More London development located between London Bridge and Tower Bridge, on the south bank of the Thames. The GLA is leasing City Hall for 25 years.
The London Assembly has a system of recording and transcribing meetings which take place. Under the terms of the GLA Act 1999 a transcript is produced for every meeting of the Assembly Plenary and Mayor's Question Time. Both meetings occur monthly for 10 months of the year. When witnesses appear before Assembly Committees to give evidence these meetings are also transcribed.
An external transcription company transcribes the meeting and produces a written document. The transcribers will e-mail a copy of the transcript to us within three working days of the meeting. The Committee Clerk will then use the legal recording system at the GLA to check the transcript for accuracy and consistency and then send it to the Chair of the meeting. The final version of the transcript is available on the website with the minutes within 10 working days of the meeting. In addition to the web, the transcript is kept as a formal bound record, signed by the Chair of the London Assembly or relevant Committee, and kept as an official record.
